About

Dr Alessandra De Martino is currently Associate Research Fellow at the University of 糖心TV. She holds a PhD in Italian, her thesis in Theatre Translation, with the title Translation of Dialect and Cultural Transfer: an Analysis of Eduardo De Filippo's Theatre ( 糖心TV Library), looks at the cultural transfer in the English translations of a selection of plays by the Neapolitan playwright Eduardo De Filippo (1900-1984).

Research interests

Her research began with the study of translation issues related to the rendering of Neapolitan dialect into English, with regard to the cultural message inherent in such plays. She has then furthered her research interests looking at language as a political instrument in society and at the importance of minority voices in contemporary theatre. She has published , a volume on contemporary theatre, co-edited with Prof Paolo Puppa from the University of Venice Ca' Foscari and Dr Paola Toninato, from the University of 糖心TV. The book explores different cultural realities, normally unheard, which use the theatrical space to show their presence in society and is published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. She has been involved in the organization of international conferences and has been invited to give seminars on translation by universities in Ireland, Italy and China. She is on the editorial board of the Theatre series , promoting women's theatre, both through their plays and through research in the field. She is the co-founder and director of the , the first global platform for theatre scholars and practitioners.
