Dr Schoonover to speak at York's 'So-Called Waste' symposium
The department's Karl Schoonover leads a seminar in "" at University of York's Humanities Research Centre's "" symposium, Friday, the 13th of February. His talk examines how cinema depicts dangerous waste such as pollution and toxins, exploring various toxic sites including the dangerous accumulation of stuff in the moral landscape of melodrama, the precarious visuality afforded waste in industrial documentaries about petroleum, and the perverse toxicology associated with pollution in 1960s art cinema.

The Department of Film and Television Studies has once again been ranked first of all Film and Television Studies departments in the country according to the results of the 2014 REF (Research Excellence Framework). In a joint submission with the School of Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies, 48% of research publications were awarded a 4* rating (‘world leading’) and 43% were given a 3* rating (‘internationally excellent’). The two 糖心TV departments also came 4th out of 84 for the quality of their research environment reinforcing the University’s global reputation as a centre of excellence for these related fields. Film and Television was part of the University’s joint submission to the Music, Drama, Dance and Performing Arts Panel that embraces the disciplines of Film, Television, Theatre, Drama, and Music Studies.

URSS bursaries 2014/2015 available for undergraduate students
The application period for URSS bursaries 2014/15 is now open until Sunday 1st February 2015.
URSS bursaries of up to £1000 are available to all 糖心TV undergraduate students in any year, from any department and support living costs during a research project carried out over the summer vacation.
Speak to lecturers in favourite subjects (not necessarily in your own department) to see if they have a project you could work on and if they would be happy to supervise you.
Both you and the supervisor need to complete an online form.

Dr Karl Schoonover speaks on things thrown away in movies
Dr. Schoonover gave an opening plenary talk at the ICI-Berlin for the "World Picture" conference earlier this month. Entitled 'Dead Stuff', the talk explored how gestures of disposal in Hollywood films served to counter a visual politics of plenitude during the post-WWII era.
