Jonathan Vickery gives European Capital of Culture keynote address

On the first weekend of November I gave an opening address at an event that marked the start of the last stage of a main strand at the European Capital of Culture in Guimarães, northern Portugal. It's not an easy time for Portugal, and the actual capital investment and budgetary levels of this ECoC is lower than many past events. And yet, Portugal has demonstrated enormous creative energy. The year long event was, of course, quite complex: the strand I participated in was the Curators' Lab, which was for artists, designers, architects, urbanists and curators, as well as many others. My paper addressed the new art spaces emerging all over Europe, each playing a role in the creative economy. My paper will soon be available through the ECoC website.
