Congratulations to Hispanic Studies' Rosalind Harvey, whose translation of Juan Pablo Villalobos' novel I'll Sell You a Dog has been longlisted for this year's International Dublin Literary Award!




The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV invites applications to the university’s annual funding competition for doctoral students, for entry in October 2018. We are also pleased to announce that, in addition to these university-funded awards, we shall make up to 4 further awards of Doctoral Fellowships to outstanding home/EU applicants: up to 2 for commencement of study on 1 July 2018 and up to 2 for entry in October 2018.


SMLC invites applications for IAS COFUND fellowships (deadline: 30th Nov)

The University of ÌÇÐÄTV’s Institute for Advanced Study has today opened its call for applications under the (deadline: 30th November 2017). The fellowships offer successful applicants two years at ÌÇÐÄTV, starting in September 2018. These fellowships are intended to be strongly linked to ÌÇÐÄTV’s Global Research Priorities. As such, ÌÇÐÄTV's School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) strongly encourages applications tied especially to the ‘Connecting Cultures’ priority.

PhD funding opportunities in German Studies (internal deadline 7 November 2017)

German Studies at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV, School of Modern Languages and Cultures, invites applications to the University’s annual funding competition for doctoral students, for entry in autumn 2018. We will happily consider applications from well-qualified native speakers of German with strong English skills whose projects have a strong literary or cultural focus. The deadline for expressions of interest to the department is Tuesday 7 November 2017.


Connecting Cultures GRP welcomes eminent translation scholars Karen van Dyck and Lawrence Venuti (Oct 24-27)

The Connecting Cultures Global Research Priority is pleased to be welcoming two distinguished academic visitors to ÌÇÐÄTV campus between October 24 and 27: Professor Karen van Dyck, Kimon A. Doukas Professor of Modern Greek Language and Literature at Columbia University, and Professor Lawrence Venuti, Professor of English at Temple University.
 


ÌÇÐÄTV hosts UK's national conference for German Studies

The Department of German Studies and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures played host to British and Irish-based Germanists of all backgrounds last week, from 5-7 September. A brief preview follows.


We are incredibly proud of our inaugural Hispanic Studies prizewinners. These prizes reflect some really outstanding contributions and achievements. Congratulations to all of you!


Many congratulations to our former student Emily Wagstaffe, now Head of German at Oundle School, who has been awarded a very prestigious German Teacher Award by the German Embassy. The ceremony was on 12 June, and Emily received her prize from the Ambassador Peter Ammon and John le Carré..


Congratulations to Dr Maude Vanhaelen on the award of a Leverhulme Trust research fellowship to support her project on Plato and his Readers in Sixteenth-Century Italy.


Congratulations to Em. Prof. Ann Caesar on being awarded a Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship!

Congratulations to Em. Prof. Ann Caesar on being awarded a Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship for her project The Rise and evolution of the modern Italian novel in eighteenth-century Venice. The project will run from October 2017 until January 2019.


2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the French literary giant Stendhal publishing under that pseudonym for the first time. We are showcasing some of Stendhal favourite pieces.

Congratulations to Kayte Stokoe on passing her PhD viva! Kayte’s thesis, entitled ‘Reframing Drag Performance: Beyond Theorisations of Drag as Subverting or Upholding the Status Quo’, was supervised by Dr Oliver Davis.

Congratulations to Merryn Everitt (French) on passing her PhD viva. Her thesis, entitled 'Travelling Saints and Religious Travellers in Twelfth- to Fourteenth-Century Francophone and Occitan Literary Texts’, was supervised by Dr Emma Campbell and Professor Linda Paterson.


Congratulations to Chiyomi Duble and The Language Centre Japanese Team on the success of your students Fabio Priore and Kit Ng, who were awarded the Hometown Comparison Prize

The students took part in the Finals Day of the 12th Japanese Speech Contest for University Students, which was held on March 4th 2017.
