About Me
My research project, titled 鈥The Making of English Politicians - Early Modern MPs and the Transformation of the Media Landscape, c. 1640-1800鈥, was supervised by Professor Beat K眉min and Professor Mark Knights and funded by the Wolfson Foundation.
I completed my BA in History and English at the Universities of Kiel and Aberdeen, followed by an MA in History at the University of Constance. I am interested in a range of topics relating to the structures of Early Modern society and scholarly attempts to understand the functions of its constitutive elements. Previously, I have worked on communication processes in so-called self-accusations within early modern witch trials. My PhD continued to focus on communication and media approaches, while shifting the subject matter to Early Modern English politicians and political culture.
Research
My PhD investigates the impact of media change in 17th and 18th-century England, with a focus on political communication and Members of Parliament. It examines the long-term implications of political agents becoming exposed to the public eye, exploring the role of MPs (and their teams) within a new, socially complex, multi-media environment. It considers their reflections, their changing perception of office, and the strategies employed by them and those with whom they engaged. The underlying media approach focuses on communication and challenges to 'successful communication' across various levels, including the parish, the constituency and the national sphere.
