Research

 
I am specialist of modern Russian and Eastern European History. My first book was on Soviet and German foreign policy in the inter war period, focussing on the interrelationship between German domestic and foreign policy and the role of Soviet foreign propaganda.

My second research area is the History of Science and Technology. I compared the transfer of technology, scientists and technicians from Germany to the Allied countries after the Second World War. I analysed the problems which arose from the need to adapt the technology to, and integrate the scientists in the Soviet scientific and industrial system. I was the first non-Russian historian who had access to the archives of the Soviet industrial ministries.

My last project analysed the impact of war experiences on the now Ukrainian city of Lviv (Lw貌w, Lvov, Lemberg) in the first half of the twentieth century. I could show how the World Wars and seven changing occupation regimes did affect the relationship between Poles, Ukrainians and Jews. I studied the relationship between war, 鈥榚thnic cleansing鈥� and nation building, and the connection of war experiences and memorial culture.

My new project deals with the symbol and cult of the 鈥淯nknown Soldier鈥�. The building of centrally placed Tombs of the Unknown Soldier started in France and England on Armistice Day 1920 and spread through Europe and the United States until after 1945 it became a global phenomenon. I will be attempting a diachronic and synchronous comparison of the cult of the Unknown Soldier. The synchronous comparison will look at the conditions influencing the emergence of the cult together with the contributing institutions and political powers and their motives, the forms and rituals, the cultural transfer of forms and contents, the adaptations and functions in different countries (especially in France, Great Britain, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the United States and – after World War II – in the Soviet Union and the GDR). With the diachronic perspective I will be looking for continuities or discontinuities of the cult after the Second World War and its adaptation to new political conditions.
