Seminar Abstract:
鈥楶opulation control is often approached as a 鈥渨omen鈥檚 issue鈥�, for good reasons. Yet from 1952鈥�1977 in India鈥攖he first country in the world to launch a national programme of population limitation鈥攎en were also frequently targeted. In this talk, Rebecca Williams argues that Indian men were incorporated into population control through (1) their presumed social role as reproductive decision-makers; (2) the reliance of the nascent Family Planning Programme on older contraceptive technologies, many of which required either the co-operation or control of male partners; and (3) the transcendence of the Family Planning Programme outside the woman-focused space of the family planning clinic.鈥�
