India has a long, diverse and colourful urban histoy: cities have for centuries been at the core of its cultural, economic and political life. But have its cities, several of them among the largest on earth, undergone a fundamental change in recent decades? Have social and economic differences within the cities become more acute and found new political and cultural expressions? Have the cities become more cosmopolitan and 'global'? Has India itself become one huge 'global city'? What distinguishes India's 'global cities' from those elsewhere? What are the future trajectories for such cities?
