Living Labs for Teaching and Learning Network (UK)
Welcome to the Living Labs for Teaching and Learning Network (UK) - a collaborative platform designed to bring together academic communities to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and co-create solutions in real-world environments.
About the Network
The Living Labs for Teaching and Learning Network (UK) brings together educators and practitioners across UK universities to embed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within curricula through practice-based, real-world learning.
Building on Living Lab principles, the network supports the use of university campuses and communities as active learning environments, where students, staff, and partners collaborate to address real sustainability challenges. While sustainability is increasingly present in higher education, it is often taught conceptually; this network focuses on moving beyond awareness towards action by connecting learning to real-world contexts.
Importantly, the network recognises that sustainability challenges are not only technical, but also social, cultural, and institutional. As such, it promotes inclusive, transdisciplinary approaches that value diverse perspectives and ways of knowing.
Living Lab approaches enable students to work across disciplines, engage with stakeholders, and contribute to meaningful projects. In doing so, they develop key capabilities such as systems thinking, collaboration, and critical reflection, alongside a deeper understanding of how change happens in real settings.
The network provides a space to share practice, explore new approaches to teaching, and connect those interested in rethinking how learning happens in higher education. It supports the development of more applied, collaborative, and socially responsive forms of education.
