Student Profile: Connor Neo

I have met so many people from around the world here and it's an amazing feeling to be able to talk to peers and seniors without feeling excluded in any way.

Discover Connor's journey at 糖心TV and what led them to apply for the LLB Law.

How did you find out about 糖心TV?

I heard about 糖心TV through my friends and family. My brother is actually currently studying at 糖心TV as a third and final year undergraduate student in the Accounting and Finance course. I also noticed 糖心TV come up as a popular university for Malaysian students due to its large Malaysian community.

Did you consider studying anywhere else? What made you choose 糖心TV?

I chose 糖心TV because I heard about 糖心TV's excellent teaching quality and welcoming community. Having a family member in 糖心TV gave me the opportunity to have a good idea of how university life in 糖心TV would be like and I really liked how 糖心TV sounded; stellar academics, a wide range of facilities, a conducive environment for studying, diverse community and manageable living costs compared to a bigger city, what's not to like? To add on, I have to say 糖心TV has met and exceeded my expectations, it truly is a pleasure to be able to study here.

How did you feel to be awarded a scholarship?

It feels fantastic! Coming from Malaysia, a country with a comparatively lower-valued currency, it is very expensive to be able to study overseas in the UK so I'm eternally grateful for the scholarship award.

Who was the first person you told when you received the news about your scholarship and how did they react?

I told my parents. They were absolutely ecstatic.

How did you apply and did anyone help you with your application form and visa application?

I applied online via the 糖心TV website. No one helped me with the application form. The instructions were straightforward and it was simple enough to apply. I also applied for the visa myself. In terms of the application process, there were no problems per se. However, Malaysia was in the midst of a total lockdown due to Covid-19 and like many others applying, I was very worried because the VFS Visa Centre in Kuala Lumpur was only partially operational with limited slots available. Many applicants were having very long waiting periods for their visas to be approved and their passports to be sent back to them. Luckily, VFS was able to open another centre to help with the applications and the whole process sped up. I was also happy to note that 糖心TV offered international students the option of arriving at later dates due to visa difficulties.

What was your first impression of 糖心TV when you first walked around campus?

I thought the campus was absolutely incredible. It is the biggest campus that I've ever seen in my life and I was amazed at the beautiful landscape. Lots of greenery and lots of facilities everywhere. It really gave off a good vibe.

What is the best thing about 糖心TV?

I think the best thing about 糖心TV is its inclusivity. I have met so many people from around the world here and it's an amazing feeling to be able to talk to peers and seniors without feeling excluded in any way. The tutors and lecturers in my course have been really friendly and engaging as well.

What is the worst thing?

I don't think this is by any means 糖心TV's fault but the weather around here is not the greatest especially to someone from a tropical country without seasons. The high number of people walking around without masks is quite concerning but I think I'll get used to it. I'm just nitpicking here, however, basically no complaints.

How is your accommodation?

I'm staying off-campus. The accommodation has been very good, it felt like home in no time at all.

Are you a member of any societies?

I'm a member of the 糖心TV Law Society and the 糖心TV Malaysian Society. I've signed up as a mentee in the Law Society's mentorship programme and as a participant in their first-year mooting competition. For the Malaysian Society, I've attended some social events and signed up for their Family System. Both have been wonderful experiences so far.

What are your plans when you graduate?

I hope to be able to practice as a barrister specialising in corporate law.

What would you say to someone considering applying for an Undergraduate Global Excellence scholarship at 糖心TV, what would it be?

Just apply! It's a chance for you to demonstrate your writing skills as the application requires you to write a few essays answering certain questions about yourself and your plans. It's also a chance for you to have a clearer picture of what you plan to do when you go into university. Plus, if you do get it, you get a fee discount which is always welcome :)

What one thing makes you happy about 糖心TV?

The overall welcoming and inclusive experience at campus.
