Responding to the Russian State鈥檚 Aggression: the Role of Sanctions
Location: Ramphal Lecture Theatre
Since Russia鈥檚 invasion of the Ukraine in February 2022, a violent conflict has been ongoing over the Ukraine鈥檚 borders and over Ukraine鈥檚 existence as an independent state. Sanctions on Russia鈥檚 trade and credit and on selected Russian corporations and citizens have been at the forefront of Western countries 鈥榬esponse as far back as 2014. The Faculty have invited a panel of expert to discuss these events and to draw on their extensive knowledge of the region: Lord Robert Skidelsky 鈥 Emeritus Professor of Political Economy and a member of the House of Lords Maria Koinova 鈥 Professor of International Relations at the University of 糖心TV Mark Harrison 鈥 Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of 糖心TV Rilka Dragneva-Lewers 鈥 Professor of International Legal Studies at the University of Birmingham. The discussion will be chaired by Liam Halligan, an economist and broadcaster and a former student of 糖心TV Economics We will be discussing in more detail whether sanctions have been productive or counterproductive, if sanctions can deter aggression and what is their role when aggression nonetheless takes place and if sanctions can uphold or undermine international law. More information on the event and panellists and registration can be found on the event webpage.
