DESCRIPTION:Asking normative questions about the digital society we want:
  reflections and challenges The ESRC Digital Good Network asks what a go
 od digital society looks like and how we get there. We take as our start
 ing point the substantial critiques of contemporary digital deployments 
 offered by social scientists\, humanities scholars\, and digital rights 
 advocates and activists. We acknowledge the rich empirical evidence of p
 roblems raised by\, for example\, social media platforms\, biometric sur
 veillance tools\, and generative AI. In surveying these critiques\, the 
 contours of the digital society we don't want become clear. However\, wh
 ilst mapping these contours is vital\, it is only a start. The Digital G
 ood Network takes the next analytic step\, inspired by a vein of scholar
 ship that challenges us to imagine more desirable futures (eg Benjamin 2
 024). In other words\, we pivot from the question 'what digital society 
 don't we want?' to 'what kind of digital society do we want\, and how do
  we get there?'. Over the past two years\, we have funded research\, tra
 ined researchers\, and connected with stakeholders\, in pursuit of answe
 ring these questions. At this juncture in our network's life\, in this p
 resentation\, we reflect on some of the challenges that arise when askin
 g normative questions like ours. We focus specifically on questions of l
 anguage. We note that the term ‘good’ is highly contested\, seen by some
  (eg Kalluri 2020) as a floating signifier misused in ‘goodness-washing’
  of still-harmful technologies. Such critics argue that other\, more nar
 rowly defined terms like justice are therefore preferable. Because a goo
 d digital society is likely to share many of the characteristics of a go
 od society\, we focus our network’s activity on three major societal cha
 llenges: 'resilience'\, 'sustainability' and 'equity'. These terms are a
 lso highly controversial\, understood in different ways by different act
 ors. They open some things up\, and close some things down. And our focu
 s on equity requires us to clarify who we refer to when we say ‘we’ in t
 he title of our talk\, or indeed\, not use the term at all. We reflect o
 n the convening power of these core terms\, on their use as heuristics\,
  and on category errors - or whether journeying towards a better digital
  society is more valuable than challenging whether it is possible. Bios 
 Helen Kennedy is Professor of Digital Society at the University of Sheff
 ield. Her research focuses on how new digital technologies - currently d
 ata\, AI and automation - are experienced by non-expert folk as part of 
 their everyday lives\, how they come into being\, the contexts in which 
 they are made and shaped\, how and whether they can promote equity\, wha
 t good digital societies looks like and why the concept of ‘the digital 
 good’ is so contested. She has secured over £9m in research funding\, in
 cluding for the current ESRC Digital Good Network and Public Voices in A
 I . Most of her research involves collaborating with non-academic stakeh
 olders in order to enact positive social change. Ros Williams is Senior 
 Lecturer in Digital Media and Society at the University of Sheffield. Th
 eir research engages with science and technology studies\, the sociologi
 es of race and ethnicity\, and of health and illness. Ros is particularl
 y interested in how ideas of racialised difference circulate in differen
 t technological and biomedical contexts\, and with what effects particul
 arly for racially minoritised people. They are an editor of the journal 
 Sociology of Health and Illness\, and Associate Director of the ESRC Dig
 ital Good Network\, a research network asking what a good digital societ
 y is\, and how we get there.
