CREATED:20210127T144553Z DESCRIPTION:Abstract: How can we find proteins that inhibit CRISPR? How c an we train a computer to identify patterns in proteins sequences and st ructures to predict their anti-microbial properties? How can we identify interactions of different proteins and their binding sites? Proteins - the workhorse of the biological cell - perform a variety of functions in the cell. These range from structural support to the regulation of diff erent biological processes and often involve interactions of multiple pr oteins. Identification of biological functions and interactions of prote ins in the wet lab requires specialized assays which can be limited in t heir throughput as well as being time consuming and labour intensive. Ma chine learning - training a computer to identify predictive patterns - i s a useful tool to guide wet lab experiments for discovering protein fun ctions and interactions. In this webinar\, we shall discuss how machine learning can be applied for the discovery of a variety of protein functi ons and their interactions. We will discuss our recent work on the disco very of anti-CRISPR proteins in collaboration with the Doudna lab (winne r of the 2020 Chemistry Nobel) as well as development of tools for anti- microbial peptide prediction and identification of viral binding protein s and their binding sites. Biography: Dr. Fayyaz Minhas joined the depar tment of computer science at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV in 2019. He is af filiated with the tissue image analytics center and the PathLAKE consort ium at ÌÇÐÄTV. He works at the crossroads of machine learning\, biology and medicine and has developed various machine learning tools in the fi elds of bioinformatics\, metabolomics and computational pathology. He is a recipient of the Fulbright award for his PhD as well as the best rese archer award from the higher education commission of Pakistan.
