 Nottingham) Conference Description: The 11th Enquire conference takes pl
 ace at an important historical and cultural moment\, as the United Kingd
 om prepares to leave the European Union on the 29th March 2019. Despite 
 the proximity of the deadline for the UK’s exit from the EU\, there rema
 ins much uncertainty regarding the implications of Brexit\, especially f
 or those involved in conducting and participating in social research. Wh
 at will be the effects of Brexit for researchers engaged in internationa
 l scholarly enterprises\, funding bids and data collection? These are pe
 rtinent and timely questions that we wish to unpack within this conferen
 ce. Yet\, Brexit demonstrates just one of many recent developments which
  have highlighted the uncertainty and precarity of contemporary politica
 l\, social and cultural contexts. Uncertainty is a central issue within 
 the social sciences. For decades\, researchers and scholars have grapple
 d with the problem of how to study society\, and social processes\, in s
 uch a way as to generate “certain” research knowledge about them. Uncert
 ainty within the academe has become an ever-more prominent challenge: sh
 ort-term casual contracts\, ongoing battles for equal pay for equal work
 \, as well as the recent strike action over pensions serve to emphasise 
 the precarious circumstances in which researchers and academics increasi
 ngly find themselves operating. So too\, events such as the Windrush sca
 ndal have uncovered the ways in which state actors can utilise their pow
 er to alter the boundaries of citizenship\, and deny rights to those who
  are UK citizens. The increasingly hostile nature of the UK environment 
 for both citizens and non-citizens alike can be seen as the source of mu
 ch uncertainty for both researchers and research participants. Consideri
 ng such issues\, for the 11th Enquire conference we wish to bring togeth
 er students and scholars for a thoughtful and timely discussion about so
