Re-draft of Regulation 29

On 24 January 2024, the Senate approved the re-draft of Regulation 29 "Code of Practice relating to Freedom of Speech, Academic Freedom and the prevention of individuals from being drawn into terrorism" (alongside the Policy on Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom), in compliance with the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 anticipated to come into force on 1 August 2024. This was noted by the Council on 7 February 2024.

The re-draft of Regulation 29 was with effect from 1 August 2024.

Updates to Regulation 34

On 26 June 2024 the Senate approved revisions to Regulation 34: Determination of Fitness to Practise to include an indicative timescale for processing Fitness to Practise cases to ensure compliance with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator’s (OIA) Good Practice Framework: Fitness to Practise.

These updates took place with immediate effect, noted by the Council on 10 July 2024.

Updates to Regulation 23

On 26 June 2024 the Senate approved revisions to Regulation 23: Student Disciplinary Offences as part of annual update proposals to ensure the Regulation remains relevant and applicable.

These updates took place with immediate effect, noted by the Council on 10 July 2024.

Revisions to Ordinance 8

On 22 May 2024 the Council confirmed, on the recommendation of the Senate, revisions to Ordinance 8 to reflect the establishment of non-academic posthumous awards (Institutional Bachelors Award, Institutional Integrated Masters Award, and Institutional Masters Award) with immediate effect.

Revisions to Regulation 40

On 17 April 2024 the Senate approved with immediate effect amendments to Regulation 40: Collaborative Courses to reflect the change of language adopted in Regulation 11 Academic Integrity, as well as the change in name of Regulation 11 (from “Procedure to be Adopted in the Event of Suspected Cheating in A University Test” to “Academic Integrity” approved in October 2021).

These changes will be noted by the Council on 22 May 2024.

Revisions to Regulation 21

On 17 April 2024 the Senate approved with immediate effect amendments to Regulation 21: Conferment of Degrees to more accurately reflect how degrees are awarded and conferred, to update the Degree Congregation’s dress code and to remove gendered language.

These changes will be noted by the Council on 22 May 2024.

Update to degree title in Appendix A of Regulation 34

On 15 February 2024 the Vice-Chancellor approved on behalf of Senate with immediate effect, and on the recommendation of the Chair of the Course Proposal Scrutiny Panel, an update to a degree title in Appendix A of Regulation 34 Determination of Fitness to Practise, from BA in Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Relationships to BA Counselling and the Psychotherapeutic Relationship.

Revisions to the Standing Orders of the Council

At its meeting on 7 February 2024 the Council approved revisions to its Standing Orders to reflect the temporary increase in the number of independent members of the Council, with changes taking immediate effect.

Revisions to Ordinance 7.1

On 7 February 2024, the Council confirmed, on the recommendation of the Senate via Chair's Action, revisions to Ordinance 7: Academic Bodies to reflect the revised constitutions of the Faculty Boards with the addition of the newly-created role of Deputy Chair (External Relations) on each Faculty Board with immediate effect.

Revisions to the Standing Orders of the Council

At its meeting on 11 October 2023, the Council approved revisions to its Standing Orders to reflect the updated size of Council, revised information classifications and updated Committee names, with changes taking immediate effect.
