We are delighted to invite you to Voices from the Shadows—LGBTQ+ Experiences During the Nazi Era hosted by the Centre for Global Jewish StudiesLink opens in a new window at the University of ��TV.

The programme brings together a screening of the documentary Voices from the Shadows, which explores the experiences of those living with severe ME/CFS, and a talk by Eric Marcus, oral historian and founder of the Making Gay History projectLink opens in a new window. Marcus will discuss his work on LGBTQ+ experiences during the Nazi era, drawing on rare archival testimonies.

The event will include time for discussion and will be of interest to colleagues working in history, oral history, medical humanities, cultural studies, and related fields.

Together, the film and talk offer a compelling reflection on how hidden or marginalized voices are documented, interpreted, and brought into historical view.

1 - Beyond the Farm: Unlocking Employment and Livelihoods in Africa’s Evolving Food Systems

Agrifood value chains across low- and middle-income countries have expanded rapidly over the past three decades, significantly driven by the aggregate investments of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) operating in midstream and downstream segments such as wholesale, logistics, processing, and retail. Yet, despite this transformation, policy and research discussions on food security continue to focus predominantly on farms or, more recently, on consumers, overlooking the critical contributions of these midstream and downstream actors within both input and output supply chains. In this talk, Liverpool-Tasie highlights the essential but often underappreciated roles of these segments, drawing on rich primary data collected across several African countries. Her work underscores the need to recognize and analyze these interconnected midstream and downstream dynamics in order to design effective food systems, food security policies and interventions.

2 - Cocoa, International Trade and Innovation in Africa

Cocoa is Africa’s most valuable agricultural export, and in 2024 the continent accounted for US$18.6 billion in cocoa and chocolate product exports within a global trade flow of US$89 billion. In West Africa, cocoa represents 52% of agricultural export value, and 45% in Central Africa, underscoring its central role in rural economies where agriculture remains the largest employer. Yet most value continues to be captured offshore due to export-oriented supply chains, limited industrial upgrading, and sustainability regulations that have become costly and restrictive rather than enabling competitiveness. Using Ghana’s structured supply chain as a reference, this talk explores deeper value-addition pathways—not only beyond processing and chocolate manufacturing, but also through emerging nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and bio-based applications that can enhance incomes and strengthen Africa’s trade competitiveness.

You are invited to attend the upcoming Sociology Impact Speed Meets, Wednesday April 29th, 14:00 - 16:00 at the Creative Community Space on Floor 2 of the Main Library.

Organised by the Research Impact team, this session is an opportunity for colleagues from across the University to come together for a Sociology Impact Speed Meets— a fast‑paced networking event designed to showcase sociological research and its impacts, build connections, and spark new interdisciplinary collaborations.

The session will open with an introduction from Cliona Boyle, Head of Research Impact. Cliona provides strategic and operational leadership for the University’s research impact, overseeing the delivery of the institutional impact strategy and the REF impact submission. She will offer a short overview of the University’s approach to impact and the wider context for this event.

We will invite attendees to share a 5‑minute speed introduction on their impact‑related work linked to sociological research. These introductions will take place in pairs, giving colleagues short, focused opportunities to present their work to one another before rotating to the next colleague.

Colleagues from the Impact Team and ��TV Institute of Engagement will also be present to answer any questions.

Overall, our aim is to highlight the breadth of sociological impact work happening across departments and explore how we can strengthen collaboration and impact.
