The first Epic Failures and Comebacks in Learning Technology symposium brought together colleagues from across the University to share honest reflections on moments when learning technology did not go to plan and the creative solutions that helped teaching and learning continue.

Too often, conversations about educational technology focus on success stories. This event created a supportive space for colleagues to explore the challenges, setbacks and unexpected outcomes that can arise when using technology in teaching, while highlighting the resilience, adaptability and innovation needed to overcome them.

The symposium was held by colleagues in Digital Learning, together with DETTA and featured a series of engaging lightning talks from colleagues the university. Speakers shared real-world experiences of technology failures, the impact these situations had on their intended learning activities, and the practical steps they took to recover and ensure students were still able to achieve their learning objectives.

Across the session, attendees gained valuable insights into contingency planning, responding to unexpected challenges, and using reflective practice to improve future teaching and learning experiences.

The presentations demonstrated that while technology can occasionally fail, these moments often provide some of the most valuable learning opportunities. By openly discussing challenges and the lessons learned, colleagues helped build a culture of reflection, collaboration and continuous improvement across the learning and teaching community.
