Digital Learning Community: Highlights from Our March Event

Digital Learning welcomed colleagues from across the university to our second Digital Learning Community event. The session brought together four presentations covering AI‑supported feedback, cross‑university collaboration, podcasting and video creation, and innovative teaching tools.

Exploring AI‑Enhanced Feedback with FeedbackFruits

We began with a session from Digital Learning’s Paul Ottey and Chris Vernon, who introduced our Proof of Concept with FeedbackFruits - an AI‑supported tool designed to offer students consistent, formative feedback.

Paul and Chris shared the thinking behind the trial, highlighting two key challenges: an increasing variation in students’ foundational writing skills and a growing demand for scalable, early‑stage feedback. They demonstrated the value in giving students a single, institutionally supported AI tool rather than leaving them to navigate a patchwork of external apps.

Connecting Through WIHEA

Next, we were joined by Jess Humphreys, Director of WIHEA, who gave an insightful overview of the network and the many ways colleagues can get involved. Jess encouraged everyone to make the most of WIHEA’s opportunities, whether through membership, learning circles, fellowships, or collaborative projects.

Jess highlighted the growing work of the AI in Education Learning Circle, which continues to bring colleagues together to explore how AI can meaningfully support teaching and learning. Look out for the upcoming WIHEA Fellowship call launching in May.

Podcasting, Videocasting, and Building Confidence in Content Creation

Paul Ottey and Jath Pathmanathan, Senior Learning Designer in Digital Learning shared updates on the support available for podcasting and video creation.

They introduced colleagues to our self‑service recording spaces, discussed the pedagogical value of podcasting and video, and explored how staff can build confidence when using specialist equipment. Paul also shared an example from a recent Student Experience workshop where participants - many complete beginners - managed to produce a polished 60‑second audio clip within just three hours.

Paul gave details of the growing range of resources designed to help users get familiar with equipment before stepping into the studio, including guides, storyboard templates, interactive tutorials, and script‑writing tools. Our team continues to offer both basic and bespoke training, along with support for tools such as RapidMooc.

AI‑Driven Teaching Tools: Zoxiy for Logic

Our final presentation came from Professor Steve Butterfill in Philosophy, who showcased Zoxiy, a bespoke AI‑powered tool designed to support students learning logic.

Zoxiy provides rapid formative feedback, enabling students to practise and receive instant guidance. Steve shared the exciting potential in AI‑enhanced teaching tools, noting that we are now at a moment where technology allows us to deliver more responsive and effective learning experiences than ever before.

Thank You – and What’s Next

A huge thank you to all our presenters and to everyone who attended, asked questions, and shared ideas. Our next Digital Learning Community event will take place in June, and we’re already looking forward to bringing you another round of inspiring sessions.

If you’d like to explore any of the tools or topics featured in this event, please do with the Digital Learning Team - we’re always happy to help. If you’re not already a member of the Digital Learning Community, you can .
