Good Morning Freedom by Sonia Boyce

Good Morning Freedom by Sonia Boyce

漏 Sonia Boyce. All Rights Reserved, DACS 2021

The print was produced to celebrate Sonia Boyce鈥檚 exhibition at Iniva, 鈥Scat: Sound and Collaboration鈥. The exhibition showed two video works and Boyce鈥檚 archive of ephemera called The Devotional Collection. A collection which Boyce began in 1990, which is an archive of ephemera, CD鈥檚, cassettes and records memorialising black British women in the music industry.

The words used in the print are from the song Good Morning Freedom by the band Blue Mink, which featured vocals by Madeline Bell. The song reached number 10 in the UK singles charts in 1970. The psychedelic colours and the font of the text give the print a 1970s feel and evoke the spirit and effervescence of the song.

Sonia Boyce said in a short video about the print 鈥榳hen you say the words in your head it makes you smile鈥.
