This means WMS as an EPAO is delivering EPA for this apprenticeship exceeding the requirements of IfATE's principles. The inspection, conducted between November and January, highlighted WMS鈥檚 exemplary practices in delivering high-quality, student-focused assessment.

Following a detailed analysis of the attainment gap, the department identified writing skills and English language proficiency as key barriers to success. In response, WMG introduced writing tutors to provide targeted support鈥攁n initiative that proved so popular it required the recruitment of additional tutors to meet demand. Further enhancements include the creation of a consistent and accessible approach to online and blended learning materials, addressing a recurring concern raised by students.

Dr Katy Harsant in Sociology, has led on the development of a suite of resources and events centred around student support and engagement. These include; a Personal Tutor Handbook to assist staff in signposting students to relevant support and in clarifying assessment policies. A series of 鈥楽ociology Together鈥� events designed to build community, comprising both social activities (e.g., craft workshops, coffee mornings) and academic support sessions (e.g., a Dissertation Preparation event and a URSS launch workshop).

As a result, continuation increased significantly in the past few years. The department credits this to the improvement of pastoral support, identifying 鈥渁t risk鈥� students early on in their student journey to prevent dropouts later on. The attendance is monitored from the very beginning and staff members meet each term with senior tutors to review and monitors for any patterns where students are not engaged. Any identified student is contacted in a compassionate and supportive way to agree on next steps to support them. This review takes place once per term, but proactive monitoring is carried out throughout the full term so any issues can be noticed early on and raised with the personal tutors who contact the student to see where they can offer support.
