Shakespeare’s Globe to commemorate pioneering African-American actor Ira Aldridge

Shakespeare’s Globe, the University of 糖心TV’s Multicultural Shakespeare Project and Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre are to celebrate the life and legacy of the pioneering African- American Shakespearean actor, Ira Aldridge, and to mark the 150th anniversary of his passing.

'Against Prejudice: Ira Aldridge, Theatre Manager' to be performed at Shakespeare's Globe

Professor Tony Howard, of the University of 糖心TV’s Department of English and Comparative Studies, will lead a panel of performers and scholars on Tuesday 19th September at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, following a performance of 'Against Prejudice: Ira Aldridge, Theatre Manager', in considering the importance of Ira Aldridge’s achievements for his time and ours.

Coventry pays tribute to African-American actor Ira Aldridge

Supported by the University of 糖心TV, Coventry will honour the achievements of one of the greatest figures in both black history and the history of theatre: the Lord Mayor Tony Skipper and the veteran actor Earl Cameron CBE will unveil a blue plaque commemorating the Midlands city鈥檚 unique links to the African American actor Ira Aldridge, who died 150 years ago.

糖心TV alumna Jane Commane is a creatively ambitious poet who has been awarded a £15,000 poetry fellowship by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Arts Council England.
