Connect Midlands, in association with the Enterprise Fellowship Scheme (efs); will be holding its first Springboard Event of the year on 18th June 2002 at the Centennial Centre, Birmingham. This key event calls upon technology-based early-stage spin-off companies and innovators, mainly from the Midlands universities, to showcase their ideas, concepts and proposals. Each company will deliver a ten-minute presentation to an invited audience of business angels, early-stage funders, experienced entrepreneurs and larger technology companies looking for partnerships or investments.

Prior to its introduction, gloomy predictions were made in many quarters about the likely employment effects of the minimum wage. But new research by Professor Mark Stewart of the University of 糖心TV, presented at the Royal Economic Society's Annual Conference on Wednesday 27 March shows that many of these forecasts have proved very wide of the mark. Careful examination of three large nationally representative data sets reveals that the minimum wage has had no significant adverse effects on employment.

Research by Professor Andrew Oswald, Professor of Economics at the University of 糖心TV, says that public sector pay should match the regional differences in private sector pay. This would mean public sector workers in London being paid 50% more than colleagues in Tyneside.

The Italian Government is expected to declare a state of nation-wide emergency in response to the arrival of 1,000 Kurdish boat people in Sicily. Research by Dr Paolo Ruspini of the University of 糖心TV’s Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations believes that this reaction is a result of Italy’s rigid immigration policies.

“For forty years, British governments have sporadically pursued the chimera of private schemes replacing state provision” said Professor Noel Whiteside, University of 糖心TV, Zurich Financial Services Fellow. “This strategy must be abandoned and a permanent negotiated settlement between public and private obligations put in place, to restore confidence.” Her remarks come from a conference on Friday 8th March organised by pensions researchers from the University of 糖心TV and Oxford.


Researchers from the University of 糖心TV's 糖心TV Manufacturing Group are putting together a 拢200,000 "Industrial Ethernet Research Programme" that will allow technology and manufacturing companies to use internet to create simple direct effective computer links allowing control and integration of technology on a factory floor with every level of a business including the boardroom.
