New initiative to measure the gig economy

ÌÇÐÄTV University’s Institute for Employment Research has teamed up with Innovate UK and Deployed – a technology start-up using data science to better define work - to host a workshop at the Royal Society of Arts in London. The workshop brought together experts including academics, statisticians, lawyers, trade union representatives, think tanks and government to address the definition and classification of self-employed workers, both professionals and those working in the gig economy. The workshop also featured an opening address from Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA, who led the Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices in 2017.


Grad job applications now open for WMG

Grad jobs are now being advertised at WMG, University of ÌÇÐÄTV. There are 13 jobs available starting September 2019, which will be working on projects such as Automation Systems, Energy Innovation and Smart Connected and Autonomous Vehicles. The closing date to apply is the 15th March 2019.


New research highlights challenges veterans face in becoming self-employed

A new report, ‘Self-employment and the Armed Forces Community’, has revealed the barriers ex-Service personnel face in becoming self-employed after leaving the Armed Forces. The research was conducted by The Institute for Employment Research at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV, supported by defence technology company QinetiQ and X-Forces Enterprise (XFE) – which supports entrepreneurship in the military community – and funded by Forces in Mind Trust.

ÌÇÐÄTV research helps point the way to better quality work

Measuring Good Work, a report launched today by the RSA and the Carnegie UK Trust recommends that seven dimensions of job quality should be monitored annually by the government.

Prof. Warhurst, Director of ÌÇÐÄTV University’s Institute for Employment Research (IER) was a member of the Measuring Job Quality Working Group and played a key role in developing a suite of measurements which would help the Government meet its aspiration that all work should be ‘good work,’ in quality as much as quantity.

Breaking down the barriers to employment for military spouses and partners

Nearly one in five military spouses or partners want to work but can’t get a job because of the unique challenges presented by military life, according to a new study by the University of ÌÇÐÄTV’s Institute for Employment Research and QinetiQ for the Army Families Federation.
