"Research shows 4292 road collisions have been caused due to brighter headlights" - Dr Carol Hawley

More than half of drivers who are dazzled by headlights – 57% – say the problem has worsened over the last 12 months with only three-in-10 (31%) disagreeing, comprehensive new .

In findings that lay bare the continued impact of headlight glare, 63% of all drivers say they are subjected to dazzle from vehicles behind that they can’t avoid, of which 14% say it happens regularly. A third of those affected by dazzle (33%) feel less safe when driving at night while a quarter (25%) say it knocks their confidence behind the wheel.

Dr Carol Hawley, Honorary Research Fellow at ÌÇÐÄTV Medical School said: “Our research for the Department for Transport found that dazzling headlights were a contributory factor for 4292 road collisions over a 12‑year period. Drivers aged 60 and over were disproportionately affected - particularly in dimly lit areas where glare is most challenging. In parallel ongoing research, funded by the Road Safety Trust, older drivers repeatedly raise headlight dazzle as a major concern, with some reporting that they avoid night‑time driving altogether due to the brightness of modern vehicle headlights.â€
