Dr Steven Brown, together with Professor Mark Smith and Professor Ray Dupree, from the Department of Physics, recently led a successful bid to the EPSRC on behalf of a consortium of UK universities which has resulted in the award of a substantial £3.7million grant.

Professor Greg Challis, of the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Wain Medal and Lecture by the University of Kent. Each year, this prize is awarded to a young scientist undertaking exceptional research at the interface between biology and chemistry.

Dr Bill Finch-Savage, of 糖心TV HRI, was recently elected unopposed as the President Elect of the International Society for Seed Science (ISSS). Bill took up his post at the 9th ISSS Conference in July.

Professor Jonathan Seville, one of the UK’s leading research engineers, has recently been appointed as the Dean of the School of Engineering.

It is with deep regret that the University has been informed of the death of Professor Peter Carpenter on Monday 21 April 2008 following a prolonged illness.
