Professor Dwight Barkley, of the Mathematics Institute and the Centre for Scientific Computing, has been awarded the 2005 JD Crawford Prize by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) for his development of numerical algorithms for pattern formation phenomena in spatially extended dynamical systems.
Professor Jane Hutton, from the Department of Statistics, has been awarded 拢198,000 from the Medical Research Council for an epilepsy project. Professor Hutton's study will concentrate on developing statistical models for the link between how well patients respond in clinical trials and patients' decisions to enter studies. This will help to provide better information on treatments and side effects.
Dr Toby Mottram, Reader in the School of Engineering, has been elected to the Council of the Institution of Structural Engineers. This follows a recent ballot among the Institution's 15,000 full members, spread over 100 countries. Dr Mottram takes up his place on the Council for three years from the beginning of the 2005-06 session in October.
