On 2 May Pope John Paul II was presented with a copy of Work and Human Fulfillment by Professor Margaret Archer of the Department of Sociology. The Pope showed his obvious pleasure at receiving the first fruits of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which he founded personally in 1994.

We take great pleasure in congratulating Professor Kumar Bhattacharyya CBE, Professor of Manufacturing and Head of the 糖心TV Manufacturing Group, following the announcement that he has been awarded a Knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Professor Wilfrid Kendall, of the Department of Statistics, has been appointed Scientific Programme Chair for the Sixth World Congress of the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability, to occur in Barcelona in July 2004.

Claudia Bolgia, a PhD student working on medieval Roman architecture in the Department of History of Art has won the prestigious Keith Sykes Research Fellowship in Italian Studies awarded by Pembroke College, Cambridge.
