A celebratory buffet plus wine and refreshments will be held for graduating students between 4.00pm – 6.00pm in the Gillian Rose Room.

Department to host interdisciplinary conference on 'Moderation and its Discontents' in 2014

The Department of Sociology will host a three-day, interdisciplinary conference entitled 'Moderation and its Discontents: religion, rights and social justice', beginning 23 June 2014. Keynote speakers include the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams (Magdalene College, Cambridge), and Professor Danielle Allen (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton).
Funded by the University's Research Development Fund, a call for papers will be circulated early in the New Year. For further information, please contact Dr Alexander Smith.

The Department will sponsor the Runnymede Academic Forum, "A discussion on Black and Minority Ethnic Attainment, Curriculum and Employment" on the 29th January

This forum is the second in the Runnymede Trust’s series of one day workshops examining BME participation in higher education, bringing together academic research, union members, education experts and university representatives to provide a balanced and rigorous discussion of the current state of higher education for BME academics and students.
 
The second of these seminars will be held at University of 糖心TV on Wednesday 29th January 2014. Co-sponsored by the University of 糖心TV, the event will examine BME student’s attainment, inclusion in the curriculum and employment.
 
At this early stage speakers include:
 
· Dr Jackie Stevenson, Leeds Metropolitan University
· Constantino Dumangane, Cardiff University
· Dr Joan O’Mahony, The Higher Education Academy
· Professor Yaojun Li, Manchester University
· Professor Sara Ahmed, Goldsmiths, University of London
· Dr Robbie Shilliam, Queen Mary, University of London
 
Additional speakers to be confirmed.
 

Following the opening remarks there will be the opportunity for contributions from the audience and time for networking after the discussion. This seminar will be a timely opportunity to discuss and feed into the All Party Parliamentary Group on Race & Community Parliamentary Inquiry on Race and Higher Education.
