Research Celebration Awards 2026

The University of ÌÇÐÄTV’s Research Celebration Awards 2026, held on Monday 23 March, marked the official launch of Research Culture Week, an initiative dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and impactful research environment across the University. The awards highlight the importance of recognising and celebrating the people, projects, and partnerships that contribute to a thriving research culture.

There is much to celebrate within the Department of Sociology, and we are delighted that several colleagues were recognised at this year’s awards for their outstanding and impactful work.

Dr Derya Ozkul was nominated in the Collaboration & Partnerships category for her project “Digitising Identity: Navigating the Digital Immigration System and Migrant Experiences.†Her research explores how digital technologies are reshaping immigration systems and the lived experiences of migrants, offering important insights into identity, governance, and inequality in an increasingly digital world. This nomination reflects the significance of her collaborative work and its real-world impact on policy and society.

In the same category, Dr Ana Chamberlen, Dr Emily Gray, Dr Ruth Bernatek, Dr Silvia Gomes, and Dr Henrique Carvalho received the award for their work on the “Introduction to Sociology and Criminology HMP Course.†This innovative initiative brings higher education into prison settings, enabling participants to engage with sociological and criminological perspectives. The programme demonstrates the transformative potential of education, fostering critical thinking, personal development, and new opportunities for individuals within the criminal justice system.

These achievements underline the Department of Sociology’s strong commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary research that addresses pressing societal challenges. They also reflect the department’s dedication to creating meaningful impact beyond academia, through partnerships that extend into communities, institutions, and policy spaces.

The Research Celebration Awards form a key part of ÌÇÐÄTV’s broader mission to support a healthy research culture, one that values inclusivity, recognition, collaboration, and innovation. By celebrating such contributions, the University continues to reinforce the importance of research that not only advances knowledge but also delivers tangible benefits to society.
