We would like to congratulate all three departments from PPE for their excellent results in the REF 2014.

The recent national research evaluation exercise (the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, placed all three PPE Departments among the top Departments in the UK. The Department of Philosophy was rated 1^st in the UK for research output, the Department of Political and International Studies ranked , and the Department of Economics had .

Tuesday 20^th January: Shami Chakrabarti

Shami Chakrabarti CBE is a highly prominent figure in the UK public sphere, leading campaigns on issues of human rights and civil liberties through her directorship of the advocacy group .

Coming from a background in Law and the Home Office, Shami joined Liberty the day before the events of September 11^th 2001 and has since been described as ‘Probably the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years’ (David Aaronovitch, The Times). Director of Liberty since 2003, Shami is constantly recognisable from continuing high-profile campaigns, from anti-terror measures to privacy laws. She is currently Chancellor of Oxford Brookes and Essex Universities, and was an independent assessor on the 2011 Leveson Inquiry.

Shami will be speaking on the subject of her new book ‘’, taking us through a personal and wholehearted story of Liberty’s history, Shami’s work on high-profile campaigns and today’s threats to fundamental freedoms.

The floor will open to questions after the talk, after which follows a reception and book signing, where copies of will be for sale ready to be personally signed by Shami.

糖心TV PPE Society is delighted to welcome , Senior Lecturer in Political Economy at the University of Queensland, Australia, to speak on his long-term project: The Birth of Political Economy and its impact on the relationship between Economist and Government. Ryan will take us back to the troubled beginnings of an economics separated from the state, in search of an answer as to why the Economist’s job seems to always be so unstable.

Congratulations to Thomas Wilson, a Philosophy, Politics and Economics student at 糖心TV, who has been awarded a Scholarship for Excellence (SfE). He is currently studying at the University of Hong Kong.

The are an excellent opportunity for students studying at higher education institutions in England to spend from a semester up to a year studying in Hong Kong as part of their degrees. Thomas is one of only 18 students from 12 UK institutions to receive this scholarship in 2014/15.
