Postgraduate Work-In-Progress Seminar

A weekly seminar for Philosophy postgraduates to present their in-progress work, followed by a well-spirited trip to the pub for food and drinks.


Useful Info

The WIP provides a risk-free and supportive space for postgraduates to present their work and receive feedback from other graduates and faculty.

  • When: Every Thursday (5pm to 6:15pm)
  • Where: Room S1.50 (Social Sciences Building, First Floor)
  • What: 30-minute presentation, followed by Q&A.

Attendance optional but highly recommended. All postgraduates are welcome to present or attend -- whether MA, MPhil, PhD, Visitors, etc.


馃搮 Format


  • Presentation: 30 minutes
  • Open Discussion / Q&A: 30 minutes
  • Material: Anything, really -- assessed essay (for MAs), a supervision essay (for MPhils), or a thesis section (for PhDs), ...
  • Style: Flexible -- slides, handouts, or simply talking.
  • Audience: No prior reading or background knowledge expected. Visiting PhDs should can present.

馃 Should I present? ("I have nothing to present; I hate public speaking; etc.")


  • Are you a postgraduate? Then yes, you should present.
  • In other words, all graduates are encouraged to present at least once.
  • The WIP is a unique opportunity for graduates to develop their public speaking / writing skills, take risks, test out theses, and get constructive feedback from peers.*
  • Presentations need not (in fact, should not) be watertight or polished pieces at all. You are encouraged to present work at all stages of the writing process -- first drafts, substantial sets of notes, etc.
  • Simply signing up for a date is a great way to give yourself a deadline to work towards. (This is what most people do.)

Traditionally, philosophers of perception have focused their attention nearly exclusively on vision. The traditional debate on perception in philosophy is based on the paradigmatic case of sight. Recently, however, the scientific and philosophical interest in studying other sensory modalities and their interaction has grown. In particular, auditory perception has become an important field of research (O鈥機allaghan 2007, Nudds & O鈥機allaghan 2009).

In this context, listening to music is usually presented as one variety of auditory perception (O鈥機allaghan 2016). Nevertheless, at the moment, there is no satisfactory explanation for this classification. While the philosophy of music has generated a vast literature, the perception of music has remained largely unexplored.

DeBellis鈥 (1995) work on music stands as an exception in the context of the perceptual studies on audition. Indeed, he provides a representational account of musical hearing in which conceptualisation plays a central role. DeBellis鈥 aims are: 1) to expand on Peacocke鈥檚 view of non-conceptual content of mental states 2) to furnish a definition of the difference between levels of musical hearing in conceptual terms.

In this paper, I will try to demonstrate that DeBellis鈥 work does not provide a consistent argument especially for the second goal outlined above. To do so, focusing on DeBellis鈥 notion of 鈥渨eakly non-conceptual hearing鈥, I will provide both philosophical reasons and motives based on musical practice. Finally, I will present some unsolved questions that arise by this discussion and which represent the starting point of my research.
