What?
MAP (Minorities and Philosophy) 糖心TV is happy to announce a student workshop on “The Politics of Recognition”. In light of recent political events and protest movements, including “Rhodes Must Fall” at the University of Cape Town and the University of Oxford, we will explore the concept of recognition, attending to its genealogy, its history and its possibilities and limitations for a future politics. Does recognition matter? Who recognises? Why should we take seriously those who seek to challenge the symbols of the environment in which we learn? How do symbols and environments affect our ability to learn? Etc.

The workshop will begin with a few remarks on what is at stake in the politics of recognition. Then, our very own Professor Miguel Beistegui will provide a short critical history of the concept of recognition, situating its inception within the history of philosophy. This will be followed by small group discussions on whatever students feel is important to address. Coffee, tea and cake will be provided.

For whom?
This event is part of a series of MAP student workshops. All undergraduate and postgraduate students are very welcome! Please spread the word, especially to students who identify as members of underrepresent groups.

By whom?
MAP is a worldwide network of students based in English-speaking philosophy departments that aims to facilitate the participation of members from underrepresented groups in academic philosophy. MAP chapters are led by graduate students, but also rely on faculty support and encourage undergraduate participation.

The film is being shown as part of the Philosophy through Film Module but anyone interested is welcome to come along. The film will start at 6:30pm.
