Dr Kaeten Mistry guest edits special issue of Intelligence and National Security

INS coverKaeten Mistry has guest edited a double-special issue of Intelligence and National Security, the world's leading journal on intelligence and international relations. The collection is entitled "".

The special issue reconsiders the historic and contemporary challenges faced by the CIA and US foreign policy since 1947. It explores the recent reforms in the American intelligence community and considers the nature of contemporary challenges. The issue also reappraises the Agency's role during crises moments for US foreign policy and reflects on how intelligence scholarship has framed interpretations and understanding of the CIA.

The contributions draw from academic and practitioner perspectives, and look to offer new frameworks for intelligence and historical scholarship. The special issue will also be the subject of a forthcoming H-Diplo|ISSF Roundtable Review.

Dr Chris Moran wins British Academy fellowship

Chris Moran has been awarded a three year British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship to be held in PAIS. The title of the project is ‘Politics, Partnership and Paranoia: Nixon, Kissinger and the US Intelligence Community’.

This is a superb achievement. The British Academy received over 800 applications, only put forward around 100 to the second round and awarded just a total of 47 fellowships across the whole of the UK. Chris’ award is the only one in entire University for this year.

The award is a recognition of the excellence of Chris’s work, and once again demonstrating the quality of PAIS and its postdoctoral programme.

Update to PaIS undergraduate handbook

The PaIS undergraduate handbook has been updated. The key changes are:

* Clarification of the responsibility of students to regularly check for updates to the undergraduate handbook (page 2).

* Inclusion of material on policies and procedures concerning harassment and complaints (pages 14-15).

* Clarification on the procedure for applying for an extension, and changes to the use of medical evidence for extension requests (page 32-3). This informs students that PaIS reserves the right to check the validity of any medical evidence provided in support of an extension with the provider of that evidence.

* Information about the move to a 3,000 word limit for assessed essays from the 2011/12 academic year (page 30). This change does not apply to students entering their final year in 2011/12. Students entering their final year remain on the 5,000 word limit

* Inclusion of information about forthcoming changes to the weighting system for core PaIS degrees (Politics, Politics and International Studies). This applies only to students entering PaIS at the start of the 2011/12 academic year (page 47).

The handbook can be downloaded from the usual place: http://bit.ly/djnRie
