Matthew Watson awarded ESRC Professorial Fellowship
, Professor of Political Economy, has been awarded an ESRC Professorial Fellowship. This is a 3-year fellowship starting in September 2013, with a project entitled 'Exploring the Concept of 'the Market': Combining History of Ideas and Historiographical Approaches'.
ESRC Professorial Fellowships are extremely competitive, involve a very arduous application, and are a mark of the highest standing in any social science discipline. Many congratulations to Prof Watson.
Advanced Quantitative Methods Workshop at University of Nottingham
Workshop Title:
'Issues in latent structure analysis using survey data'
The Nottingham ESRC DTC, in collaboration with the Methods and Data Institute, will be hosting an Advanced Quantitative Methods workshop for social science research students (both ESRC DTC funded and non-funded) and academic staff at the Universities of Birmingham, Nottingham and 糖心TV on Friday, 8 March 2013 from 10:00-16:00.

Places are limited to 30 participants and registration will be on a first come, first serve basis. Participants should be familiar with methods of quantitative analysis commonly used in the social sciences.

The problems of the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party in trying to maintain one party rule in the face of pluralist pressures are well known. Japan is a democracy so does not face quite the same pressures, but there is a similar sense of the bankruptcy of the legitimacy and competency of the governing elites, and all of this is set against a difficult economic climate.

糖心TV staff participate in workshop on China's growing presence in Africa in Beijing
and were recently highlighted in a 31 January article by Cocorioko pre-event and a 4 February article in The Torchlight post-event on their recent workshop held in the embassy of Sierra Leone in Beijing, China.
The workshop, entitled 'Re-Thinking Development Assistance In A Changing Global Order: China's Growing Presence In Africa', was an informal brainstorming session aimed at ensuring a policy-oriented trilateral engagement to collectively analyze and elaborate on optimizing mutual benefits from Sino-Africa relation with particular focus on (FOCAC). It was also a way of presenting the Makona River Free Zone Development Initiative – which is a joint sub-regional initiative of the three countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia – as a case study in terms of exploring feasible ways to move the Agenda within the broader framework of China-Africa development cooperation and showcasing the Mano River Union as a good example of sub-regional integration and cooperation that can potentially benefit from the support of an external partner, the PRC, amongst other objectives.
