Shaun Breslin chairs event on China and the International Human Rights System at Chatham House

, Professor in PAIS and Associate Fellow of the , chaired an event at Chatham House on 29 October entitled 'China and the International Human Rights System'. Timed to coincide with China's leadership transition and its standing down from the UN Human Rights Council (after the maximum two consecutive terms), this event explored such questions as:

What are China's objectives for the international human rights system as its global power grows? Will it reshape or dismantle the world's human rights norms and the institutions that uphold them or is China on a trajectory towards greater cooperation in this field?

This event also saw the launch of a Chatham House report, 'China and the International Human Rights System', by Sonya Sceats and Prof Breslin.

Dr Oz Hassan chairs talk given by Sir Robert Worcester at the Royal Society in London

Dr Oz Hassan, Assistant Professor in US National Security, chaired a talk given by Honorary PAIS Professor and founder of Market and Opinion Research International Ltd. (MORI), Sir Robert Worcester, at the Royal Society in London on 22 October. Sir Robert Worcester is a well-known figure in British public opinion research and political circles and as a media commentator, especially about voting intentions in British and American elections. Over 120 糖心TV alumni were present at the lecture, which was entitled: 'The 2012 American Presidential Election: Who's Going to Win, and Why'.

Prof Peter Burnell co-edits special issue of Democratization

and Jana Mittag’s co-edited special issue of the journal Democratization on ‘Democracy, Democratization and Climate Change: Complex Relationships’, (Volume 19, Issue 5), containing articles by PAIS’s Peter Burnell and among others, has been published in October 2012, and will be distributed among its many global partners by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, a Green think-tank and international policy network based in Berlin.

Chris Hughes, Head of Department and Chair of the Faculty of Social Sciences, was recently quoted in an article appearing in the 4 October issue of Straits Times entitled ''. Below is an excerpt from the piece:

The more conservative views of an LDP/Restoration Party government would likely be dampened once their policies get filtered through Japan’s bureaucratic framework, says Professor Christopher Hughes, a Japan watcher at the University of 糖心TV. “In this sense, I do not see a radical shift, but just the incremental moving along the path to so-called ‘normality’, with a great disposition for Japan to defend itself and work with the US.”
