Professor Pippa Norris will be visiting the department on Wednesday July 19th, before receiving an honorary award at 糖心TV's summer degree congregation.

More than 40 years ago, Pippa Norris did her undergraduate degree here at 糖心TV University, at PAIS.

Now, she is an eminent political scientist, public speaker, and professor in Comparative Politics at Harvard University.

Her work has focused on a wide range of topics: elections, integrity, populism, democracy, gender and communication.

She has published around 40 books which have been translated into more than a dozen languages. She's one of the most cited political scientists in the world; in fact, she's ranked 4th by Google Scholar.

It's with great pleasure to welcome back Pippa Norris!

She will give not only a lecture (on the world-wide wave of populism), but also a seminar (on electoral integrity), while being here at 糖心TV for a few days. Please see below, more information. The two events will take place on July 19, from 13.00-14.30 (lecture) and from 15.30-17.30 (seminar). The lecture is open to everybody. Dr has recently been awarded the Manas Chatterji Award for Excellence in Research on Peace Economics and Peace Science, she received the award at the 17th Jan Tinbergen Conference at University of Antwerp on June 27.

The award goes to a scholar who distinguished herself or himself with her or his research activities in the domain of Peace Economics and Peace Science with specific regard to developing countries.

The winner is chosen by Prof. Manas Chatterji in consultation with the Steering Committee of the Network of European Peace Scientists.

On July 3-4 Dr André Broome participated in an Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) workshop in Kyrgyzstan.

Organised by the OSCE Academy in Bishkek in cooperation with the University Paris 13 (Paris), the American University of Central Asia (AUCA, Bishkek) and the French Institute for Central Asian Studies (IFEAC, Bishkek) within the framework of the research project GLOBALCONTEST funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), the workshop gathered high profile academics and experienced practitioners from the region and beyond working on international organizations and global governance questions.

Dr Broome spoke on the opening panel of the workshop on the topic of ‘Contesting Transnational Policy Paradigms: Conditionality, Capacity Building, and Global Benchmarking in Central Asia’, when he presented new research from the Global Benchmarking Project within the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation on the methodological flaws and political distortions inherent in country ratings and rankings and how these have been applied to countries in Central Asia.

An extended analysis of the politics and pathologies of global benchmarking by international organisations can be found in a new research paper co-authored with Alexandra Homolar and Matthias Kranke : 'Bad Science: International Organizations and the Indirect Power of Global Benchmarking'. Everyone in PAIS, and the wider University, are deeply saddened by the news of the death of Alexander Paul. Alex was an undergraduate student here in PAIS. Alex's funeral took place on June 20.

Alex was an incredible student who will be sadly missed by all the students and staff of PAIS. Many students have spoken about the huge impact he had on their lives. They have spoken, in particular, of his kindness, his bravery, how he always made others feel good about themselves, and his desire to help those from less fortunate backgrounds.

Alex made a huge impact on the department as a whole – both through his studies, and through his work as a PAIS student ambassador. Alex was a lead item on our news pages (and in the national press!) at the very start of his studies through his speech at a party conference on the disproportionate amount of stop and search routines carried against Black and Asian males. Alex believed in the power of education to inspire. He was well known across campus for his energy and positivity, and his talents as a spoken word artist and performer. Alex achieved so much and we will all really miss him.

PAIS PhD Candidate, Columba Achilleos-Sarll, has written a blog for UCL titled "Where are the Women at the Big Boys’ Table?"

After a year of political flux and upheaval, the Brexit negotiations officially began on Monday 19June. The underrepresentation of women at the highest political level is one thing which appears to have remained constant. Columba Achilleos-Sarll, a PhD candidate at the University of 糖心TV, points out that only one and two women make up the UK and EU negotiating teams respectively. She assesses the impact that this could have on the process, and what it means more broadly.
