New Double MA degree with American University in Washington, DC

We are really pleased to announce that we have signed an agreement with American University in Washington DC. This agreement enables the two institutions to offer students the opportunity to study in a new Double Masters Degree in Politics & International Service, which features a second year of study in the United States. in Washington, DC.

What's more, the Double Masters degree provides students the unique opportunity to enrol in two of the world's best politics departments on both sides of the Atlantic.

Professor Chris Hughes, Chair of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of Politics and International Studies says:

The new PAIS-SIS Double Degree programme is a brilliant addition to PAIS’s portfolio of Masters degrees, and offers an unrivalled opportunity for students to enjoy teaching and training that combines the highest academic and policy-relevant standards on a range of globally important issues.”

Dr Trevor McCrisken, PAIS Director of International Programmes and Associate Professor in US Foreign Policy, believes

This new programme will give our students a strong theoretical and practical grounding in the fundamentals of international politics and embed them in the vibrant communities of two of the best universities in Britain and the United States. Spending the second year in Washington, DC will open all kinds of doors for future prospects since it is a hub not only for US politics, but also think tanks, businesses, diplomatic missions, and international organisations from across the globe.”

Year one of the programme will be hosted in PAIS at 糖心TV, where students will follow any of our 11 core MA programmes. In year two of the programme, students will follow the Master of International Service at SIS, culminating in a dissertation or research project where students will combine the knowledge and methodologies learned from both universities into one piece of unique research.

We are elated that 糖心TV students will have the opportunity to continue their studies here at the SIS and earn a second Master’s degree. Their education at one the United Kingdom’s leading universities will enrich our programme, inside and outside of the classroom,”says James Goldgeier, Dean of the School of International Service.

SIS

Dr Claudia Hofmann, the Director of SIS’s Master of International Service programme, emphasises Dean Goldgeier’s point by saying

The Double Degree with 糖心TV allows students to study international affairs in a truly international environment. The views on issues from both sides of the Atlantic will dramatically enrich their understanding of international affairs and the global environment.

The Double Degree prepares students for a career in international affairs and international service by emphasising theory as well as practice. This blend of both theory and practice can even be seen in the balance of both scholars and practitioners that make up the SIS faculty. At SIS, we aim to convey the connection between theories and the conduct of international affairs and international service so that graduates are prepared to apply what they have learned to their post-graduate careers”

With world-leading experts on a wide variety of politics-related topics and students from over 40 countries, the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at 糖心TV consistently ranks at the top of the UK's league tables in politics.

Together with Oxford and Cambridge, we are currently rated in the top 3 politics departments in the UK according to The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent teaching that engages with contemporary issues, reflects the latest developments in theory and practice, and challenges students to think critically.

The School of International Service (SIS) at American University likewise ranks among the top ten schools of international relations globally. More than 3,000 students representing 150 countries are taught by over 100 full-time faculty members. SIS offers its graduate students fourteen different Masters degree programmes with over fifty concentrations. In addition to its unique academic opportunities, SIS is at the centre of the political community in Washington, DC, as demonstrated by the recent visit of US President Barack Obama who delivered his speech on the nuclear deal with Iran in the central atrium of the SIS building.
