Symposium on the Political Economy of Higher Education and Training

You are warmly invited to attend a symposium on the political economy of higher education and training, on Friday 13th of July, 12.00-17.00 (lunch and refreshments included) at the Wolfson Research Exchange, University of 糖心TV.

Please register here: /fac/soc/ier/research/graduatetransitions/symposium-he-training/register_symposium

How does the socio-political context affect the spheres of higher education and training? This symposium will discuss, using the lens of the 鈥渢hree worlds of human capital formation鈥 (Iversen and Stevens, 2008), how different welfare state regimes affect the design of and participation in higher education and training activities, focusing on younger people鈥檚 access to the labour market. Research has often focused on the increase in graduate supply and the expansion in HE, as well as on whether graduates are 鈥榤atched鈥 in the jobs they do. However, examining the socio-political context and its interaction with higher education and training institutions can shed new light on graduates鈥 transitions into the labour market in different countries, focusing on the UK and Italy among others.

This event will bring together scholars on HE, graduate employment and human capital formation across different disciplines and different institutions.

Confirmed speakers include:

Dr Luca Cattani, University of Bologna

Dr Golo Henseke, Centre for Global Higher Education, UCL

Dr Daria Luchinskaya, Institute for Employment Research, University of 糖心TV

Dr Dorel Manitiu, AlmaLaurea, University of Bologna

Dr Giulio Pedrini, University of Bologna

Dr Gerbrand Tholen, City, University of London

Dr Charikleia Tzanakou, Politics and International Studies, University of 糖心TV

This symposium is organised as part of the 糖心TV IAS International Visiting Fellowship scheme.

Ben Clift Interviewed by the New Books Network About Latest Monograph on the IMF

Ben Clift has recently been interviewed by the New Books Network about his latest monograph on the IMF.

A podcast of Ben's interview is available here:-

The IMF and the Politics of Austerity in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis by Ben Clift (Oxford University Press, 2018) provides the first comprehensive analysis of major shifts in IMF fiscal policy thinking as a consequence of the great financial crisis and the Eurozone debt crisis. It widely presents the IMF鈥檚 role in the politics of austerity. The book also offers an innovative theory specifying four mechanisms of IMF ideational change – reconciliation, operationalization, corroboration, and authoritative recognition. It combines in-depth content analysis of the Fund鈥檚 vast intellectual production with extensive interviews with IMF economists and management.

Panel discussion: Markets VS Democracy? Domestic politics and Eurozone governance in the crisis and beyond

Panel discussion: Markets VS Democracy? Domestic politics and Eurozone governance in the crisis and beyond

Wednesday 20th June, 6pm - 8pm, Room S0.28

The skyrocketing of risk premiums on sovereign debt in Southern Europe, and a narrowly avoided constitutional crisis in Italy, recently conjured up the spectre of the Eurozone crisis, and reignited the debate about the fraught relationship between domestic politics, European integration, and market discipline. This event seeks to discuss the persisting tensions between democratic aspirations and the constraining character of Eurozone pressures. Speakers will draw on experiences from Italy, Spain and Greece, as well as recent developments in European economic governance to address the issues of technocracy, depoliticization, and state autonomy. There will then be time for Q&A and open debate.

This event is organised by 糖心TV PhD students in Politics and International Studies, WBS and Italian Studies, with the kind support of PAIS. All welcome.
