The Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at 糖心TV present the second panel in our weekly live-streamed Global Insights series with our partners in Canada, the US, Ethiopia and Germany

糖心TV experts from PAIS and the 糖心TV Interdisciplinary Research Centre for International Development (WICID) will be joined by colleagues from the Balsillie School in Canada, the Institute for Strategic Affairs in Ethiopia, American University in the US, and Konstanz Universitat in Germany to share their views on the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the global south.

Issues addressed in this episode will include gender, elections, food security, migration, security, justice and human rights.

We hope that you have all signed up for, and been receiving, the central University student newsletter - /students/newsletter. Please do ensure that you read each issue thoroughly as this is main way for the University to keep you updated of all COVID-19 related issues as they impact on your student experience. Please note that these normally come from the Internalcomms@warwick.ac.uk email address. An archive of these student newsletters are available online for you to review.

Many of your questions will also hopefully be answered via the central FAQs, which the University will continue to update. In due course, the University will release more detailed information about learning, teaching, and assessment, which, in turn, will inform the Department鈥檚 approach – we appreciate your continued patience with this process.

When it comes to more specific issues, the Department is working closely with the University and seeking approval for our plans. Thank you for your understanding as we work together with the central University to ensure the delivery of solutions that are do-able, clear and 鈥榡oined up鈥� across the University – we really appreciate it. Congratulations to Laura Vansina who won a mobility grant from the Jean Monnet Network 鈥淏etween the EU and Russia鈥� (BEAR)! Vansina, a first-year PhD researcher at PAIS working on Russian memory politics, visited the Universities of McGill and Montreal in Canada in February 2020 as part of an exchange fostering inter-university cooperation on research and teaching on the post-communist space. In Montreal, Vansina enhanced her work on her research proposal and taught a class at the University of Montreal.

Vansina writes about her exchange: 鈥楾his research stay proved to be an extremely enriching experience. On the one hand, I acquired an abundance of new research perspectives and experiences that will be invaluable for my further PhD journey. This stay allowed me to expand my network and gain further insights into my research topic.

Not only did I have the opportunity to meet and discuss my ideas with a number of renowned scholars working on the post-Soviet space and memory studies, but I also was offered an opportunity to present my research and teach a class on Russian memory politics.

Arriving in such a multicultural and hospitable environment stimulated me a lot, both academically and personally. It was great to meet so many people with the same research interests and to discover new academic environments and approaches.

On the other hand, I learned how to survive on (-20掳C) weather conditions and discovered that snowy patches on frozen lakes convert the less experienced ice skater into a human snowplow. I am very grateful to the BEAR Network for giving me this enriching opportunity. To all my PAIS peers presented with chances such as these, I wholeheartedly recommend accepting them with both hands and making the most of it!鈥�
