Keith Hyams awarded BA research funding on Indigenous Climate Adaptation

Keith Hyams has been awarded a British Academy International Challenges Research Project Grant for his project 鈥楻emedying Injustice in Indigenous Climate Adaptation Planning鈥. The project investigates ethical aspects of the relationship between indigenous communities, climate change, and adaptation policies. It asks how adaptation policies that integrate indigenous knowledge on climate adaptation can work to reduce the inequitable distribution of climate impacts on indigenous populations. The project will be undertaken in collaboration with the University of Makerere in Kampala, and Batwa Indigenous Communities in the South West of Uganda.

Keith Hyams awarded Leverhulme funding on Global Catastrophic Risk

Keith Hyams has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Project grant for his project 鈥楢nthropogenic Global Catastrophic Risk: The Challenge of Governance鈥. The project looks at long term threats to humanity arising from advances in emerging technology, aiming to identify the political obstacles that stand in the way of progress on governing these risks, and ethical guidelines within which new governance solutions for specific risks will be advanced. The project focusses on three case studies, in nanotechnology, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence, and will be undertaken in collaboration with Co-Investigators in the departments of biology, chemistry and computer science.

Stuart Elden鈥檚 Foucault books reviewed and discussed


fld.jpgStuart Elden two books (Polity 2016) and (Polity 2017) have recently been reviewed and discussed in a number of places.

A review of both books can be found in by Bruce Robbins and in by Peter Gratton (along with Foucault鈥檚 The Punitive Society).

A review of Foucault鈥檚 Last Decade by Kurt Borg is in ; and one of Foucault: the Birth of Power at the by Syamala Roberts.

He has also taken part in discussions with Dave O鈥橞rien for the New Books in Critical Theory series on both books – Foucault鈥檚 Last Decade and Foucault: The Birth of Power .

New PSA Prize named in recognition of PAIS Professor

shirin.jpgWe are delighted to announce that the UK Political Studies Association has launched a new prize in recognition of Professor Shirin Rai鈥檚 "significant contributions to the discipline of feminist International Relations and International Political Economy."

The Shirin M. Rai dissertation prize, for the best dissertation in International Relations, has now officially been launched. A blog announcing the PSA鈥檚 new framework for prizes and awards, and further information about the application process, can be accessed here: .

While many professional associations name prizes after those who have retired, the PSA鈥檚 new framework is designed to acknowledge active and leading scholars in the discipline; very many congratulations to Shirin on this hugely impressive accolade, which is yet further recognition of her leading status in the discipline and an important projection of PAIS鈥 standing in the field.
