PAIS: No 1 in The Times/The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019

We are delighted to announce that the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) is ranked 1st of 83 UK Politics departments in the . This influential national league table reflects latest data, including student satisfaction (NSS) research excellence, and graduate prospects.

The University of ÌÇÐÄTV is ranked 10th overall — a University press release can be found here.

Our latest position in The Times/The Sunday Times follows on from other great successes over the summer. We achieved 95 per cent in the National Student Survey (NSS), and saw a further increase in graduate employment prospects. 97 per cent of 2016/17 graduates were working or in further study. Moreover, 91 per cent of those were in graduate level work or study.

Dr Juanita Elias, Head of PAIS, commented:

‘Without a doubt, staff and students in PAIS will be delighted with this incredible result. The number one ranking in the 2018 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide league table is testimony to the hard work and dedication of all PAIS staff over the years. In PAIS we are committed to a research-led approach to teaching – this provides students with an unparalleled learning experience in which they are exposed to some of the most pressing debates in national and international politics today. With the start of term imminent, we look forward to welcoming our new intake of students who will no doubt benefit from the first class learning environment on offer in PAIS. Congratulations to all staff and students on this impressive achievement!’

We thank all staff and students who have contributed to this outstanding achievement. With a number of exciting and ambitious plans for the 2018/19 academic year and beyond, we look forward to sustaining and building on these successes in the months and years ahead.

NSS Dialogue

The Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) is delighted to announce that in the 2018 National Student Survey we have achieved an overall student satisfaction result of 95 per cent for PO-coded degrees.

This year PAIS has regained our position as 1st in the University for overall student satisfaction. We are particularly pleased to report that we are 1st in the University for assessment and feedback, and 2nd for organization and management. We are also 1st in the University for student feedback being acted on and 2nd for staff valuing students' views and opinions about their course.

We have also improved our position nationally and are now ranked 1st for Politics in the Russell Group for overall student satisfaction. Other highlights among our Russell Group competitors include:

  • 1st for Teaching
  • 1st for Assessment and feedback
  • 1st for Organization and management
  • 1st for Student voice

Our sustained performance in overall student satisfaction in recent years is very impressive with our three year rolling average now also running at 95 per cent:

2017

2016

97 per cent

2015

2014

The 2018 NSS results also follow two very encouraging outcomes in recent international league tables where the Department has improved its position since 2017:

2018 QS: PAIS is ranked #42 out of 200 (up from #44=)

2018 Shanghai: PAIS is ranked #37 out of 400 (up from #47)

These impressive outcomes are due to an outstanding team effort among academic and professional services colleagues as well as our fantastic students. Thanks to everyone for all your hard work and support in terms of teaching, feedback, and the student experience.

We look forward to working in partnership with our amazing students and dedicated staff to sustain and build on these strong results, which reflect our deep commitment to research-led teaching excellence. At the start of the new academic year we will feedback in greater detail to all students and we will discuss and take forward ideas for further enhancement of the PAIS student experience via our Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC).
