During her visit to PAIS, Professor Winanti will present three Leverhulme Lectures. These lectures will be open to the public.
Leverhulme Lecture 1
Industrial policy in the Global South amid current global political dynamics
Major economies, both from the Global South and North, have embraced industrial policy to stimulate growth and innovation. For an emerging nation, industrial policy serves multiple functions. It not only tackles market failures as traditional perspectives suggest but also encompasses wider strategic development objectives. These objectives include addressing geo-economic competition and geopolitical tensions, confronting pressing challenges like climate change—through both mitigation and adaptation—and implementing catch-up strategies in response to rapid technological advances prompted by digital transformation. The lecture will focus on how industrial policy is enacted in the Global South amid today鈥檚 global context. As countries face multi-faceted challenges such as economic inequality, environmental sustainability, and technological progress, customized industrial policies are being utilized to enhance growth and competitiveness in these areas. Additionally, the dynamics of global trade policies, geopolitical tensions, and evolving alliances push nations in the Global South to adopt methods that not only empower local industries but also enhance their standing on the international market stage.

How BRICS membership can enhance Indonesia's Green Transition Efforts
As Indonesia embarks on its ambitious journey toward a green transition, it finds itself at a critical juncture where addressing environmental issues intersects with its industrial policy and sustainable economic growth. This transition entails a comprehensive re-evaluation of its current industrial policy and development models, embracing sustainability opportunities while confronting various formidable challenges. Additionally, Indonesia faces the pressing task of building resilience against climate change. It necessitates a multifaceted approach that integrates disaster risk management and climate adaptation strategies into national and local development plans. Indonesia鈥檚 recent membership in the BRICS is expected to provide alternative support for Indonesia鈥檚 green transition effort. This talk will cover the potential of BRICS as an alternative platform for Global South countries like Indonesia to achieve their green transition targets.
Leverhulme Lecture 3 (E2.02, 11.30am, 10 December 2026)
The International Political Economy of Everyday Life in Indonesia: I-PEEL in Global South Perspective
Universitas Gadjah Mada is a pioneer in Indonesia, introducing International Political Economy as a sub-discipline within the International Relations curriculum since the late 1980s. The current curriculum now incorporates the I-PEEL approach in its teaching. This integration signifies an increasing awareness of the need to apply these concepts to understand how wealth and power are intertwined in daily life, and the systemic causes and implications. The lecture will discuss the experience of integrating the I-PEEL approach into the IPE curriculum. Recent changes in Indonesian leadership have altered both domestic and foreign policy directions, which is expected to enhance discussions about non-Western perspectives on the everyday international political economy.
