New book from community-led participatory research on Cambodia-Thailand online conflict

PAIS PhD Candidate Raymond Hyma has been working with 24 co-researchers in Cambodia and Thailand since 2024 to better understand rising hate speech and intergroup conflict in online spaces through his doctoral project and community partnerships in both countries.

Between Likes and Loathing: A Cross-Border Inquiry into the Online Conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, a co-authored book by the team, shares findings of this research that show how everyday online interactions often reflect, and sometimes intensify, broader historical, cultural, and political tensions between the two countries.

Drawing on more than one hundred facilitated conversations using the Facilitative Listening Design (FLD) peace research methodology during a period of escalating conflict between the two countries, the study explores how each side views the other, engages in online interactions, and is emotionally impacted by the strain of ongoing antagonism. At the same time, the collaborative and participatory research process itself demonstrates the potential for dialogue, trust-building, and cooperation, even in contexts of heightened conflict and polarisation.

The book is available online here: https://wpmcambodia.org/project/between-likes-and-loathing-a-cross-border-inquiry-into-the-online-conflict-between-thailand-and-cambodia/
