MS0.1

PAIS FILM CLUB - TUESDAY 18th NOVEMBER 2014 - FREE ENTRY

7pm MS0.1 (Maths and Stats Building): WAG THE DOG (starring Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman)

with an introduction from Erzsebet Strauss: "When is a War not a War?: Post-Structuralism in Wag the Dog"

WAG THE DOG

Shortly before an election, a spin-doctor and a Hollywood producer join efforts to fabricate a war in order to cover up a presidential sex scandal.

The President of the USA is accused of fondling a young girl scout visiting the Oval Office just a few weeks before Election Day. Conrad Brean (Robert DeNiro), a political spin doctor, is called to a secret midnight meeting at the White House underground command bunker by Winifred Ames (Anne Heche) one of the President's advisers, where she asks for his help to engineer a way and a means to divert the news of the scandal when it breaks in the newspapers the next day. Brean suggests creating an artificial war for television to distract the American public. He brings in Hollywood producer Stanley Motss (Dustin Hoffman) to create the images of a humanitarian crisis, the American response, even a charity song and video, all to save the President from disgrace...
