Dr. Moran Mandelbaum (University of Keele) - Homonationalism in IsraelS0.08In this talk, Dr. Moran Mandelbaum from the University of Keele, will critically examine the Israeli government's positioning as '… one of the world's most progressive countries in terms of equality for sexual minorities… '. This talk further extends discussions of Israel's 'pink-washing' -- identified as a key strategy in Israel's public relations management. Drawing on Jasbir Puar's notion of 'homonationalism' - meaning, the realignment of LGBT rights with nationalism - and the concept of settler colonialism, - the talk will explore the effects of Israel's pro-LGBT discourse and its reception by LGBT citizens of Israel. In particular, it will focus on the case of the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF's) approach towards LGBT recruits as well as the rise in LGBT campaigning on the political right. The event will be hosted by ÌÇÐÄTV Friends of Palestine, ÌÇÐÄTV Pride and ÌÇÐÄTV for Justice in Palestine. It is open to ÌÇÐÄTV students and staff only. Please bring your ÌÇÐÄTV ID. Date, time and venue: Thursday 10 May, 6-7.30pm in S0.08 |
