Humanitarian Data in Emergency Response: Simulation Workshop
We are pleased to announce an upcoming event that bridges the worlds of humanitarian response and data collection. The International Organisation for Migration- UN Migration Agency and University of 糖心TV are co-organising an Emergency Response Data Collection Simulation Workshop by IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) – one of the largest primary data collectors on migration and displacement – to provide interesting perspectives and insights on climate mobility.
The four-hour interactive workshop immerses students in the humanitarian data collection during emergency response. Working in teams, participants will take on roles and navigate unexpected challenges. Through scenario briefs, real-time challenges and group presentations, students will develop a survey tool and 1-page Flash Update for decision-makers. The objective of the event is to presents student with an overview of how emergency response data is collected, and the importance of clear, evidence-based reporting in crises. As such, students without a strong technical background are highly encouraged to participate as it is not a pre-requisite for working with data.
Event Description:
In the first part, participants are introduced to the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) methodological framework, the types of data collected and key considerations for data collection. Each team then receives a scenario brief and respondent profiles to guide their work, and teams select priority questions and respond to a few unexpected challenges that are introduced during the process. Then students are provided with the data and analyze findings to feed into a 1-page Flash Update. The workshop concludes with presentations and feedback where each team presents their Flash Update in a 5-minute briefing, followed by reflections from peers.
