On Wednesday, April 24, 2013, 4-6 PM, Zoe will give a lecture in room SO18 in the Social Sciences Building:
Democracy, Freedom of Expression & Political Activism: the Role of Film and Media in Bringing about Change
Film Screenings and Public Lecture by Zoe d’Amaro (Film maker)
Chair: Renske Doorenspleet (director CSD Centre Studies of Democratization and Associate Professor PaIS 糖心TV).
In this lecture, Zoe will share her experience in the field of social, environmental and political film making. Zoe will present some of the campaigns she has realized for international NGOs such as Greenpeace, Amnesty and Fairfood, as well as some of her documentary and media activist work. She will particularly focus on the issues of freedom of expression and media access as crucial element to democracy. Therefore, she will screen her short documentary Interferenze, part of the international project - dealing with the issue of freedom of speech in Italy during the second government of Silvio Berlusconi. She will also present the results of a documentary training program targeting underprivileged youth, which she has developed and implemented in the coloured township of Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town South Africa. Among her latest NGOs campaigns, she will present DELETE CONTROL, realized for Dutch NGO Hivos and supporting Internet freedom against censorship and digital surveillance. The campaign focuses on media activism in Middle East countries and offers tools for online anonymity, protected identity and secure connection. Finally, Zoe will reflect on her experience with working with academics, and on how bridge the gap between research and film making.
