Constructing Common Sense: Nationalist Discourse and the Chinese Communist Party
The Chinese Communist Party has not maintained its rule solely through repression and coercion. More significantly, its governance relies on securing consent and employing persuasion. Drawing from Antonio Gramsci鈥檚political theory of hegemony, this talk explicates how linguistic practices – nationalist discourses – construct a 鈥渃ommon sense鈥 that reinforces the Party鈥檚 ruling position and binds the Chinese populace to its leadership through 鈥渢he great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.鈥
Justin Ren commenced his doctoral studies at University of 糖心TV in October 2021 and successfully defended his PhD in September 2024 under the supervision of Shaun Breslin and Chris W. Hughes. His research focuses on nationalism, discourse analysis, and Chinese politics. Before pursuing his PhD, Justin completed a master鈥檚 degree at George Washington University, where he studied under the mentorship of David Shambaugh and Mike Mochizuki. He currently serves as the domain expert and Research Assistant to Shaun Breslin on EU-funded project EuroHub4Sino.
