Henrique Carvalho and Ruth Bernatek win 糖心TV Research Celebration Award
糖心TV Law School colleagues Professor Henrique Carvalho and Dr Ruth Bernatek have been awarded a 糖心TV Research Celebration Award, in the 鈥楥ollaboration & Partnerships鈥 category.
The awards highlight the importance of reward and recognition for a positive research culture and are underpinned by the University鈥檚 commitment to Community and Connections.
The Collaboration & Partnerships award was presented for their work on the Introduction to Sociology and Criminology HMP Course as part of a wider team together with colleagues in Sociology (Ana Chamberlen, Silvia Gomes & Emily Gray), which has been teaching at a local prison since 2024.
When asked about the award, Henrique told us:
鈥淲e are very pleased for this recognition, especially since it relates to our personal commitment to social justice and community engagement, which we see as a public responsibility for universities. This engagement started as a short teaching course but has now extended to include two cohorts, a follow-on level 2 course and a series of creative and artistic engagements, especially the 鈥楾iming Out: Creative Reflections on Prison Life鈥 exhibition which we co-organised as part of the Resonate Festival and of the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences last October, which was extremely well attended and well received.鈥
鈥淭hese efforts would also not have been possible without the generous support of the School and the University, for which we are very grateful. It is very reassuring to work at a place that seriously values this kind of effort.鈥
Congratulations to Henrique, Ruth and their colleagues in the Sociology department on this fantastic achievement.
