LLM Alumnus secures new law and landmark win for UK renters
Ben Twomey, who studied on our LLM in Advanced Legal Studies from 2015-2016, is Chief Executive at ‘Generation Rent’, who recently secured a landmark win for renters in the UK.
After a decade of tireless campaigning, the Renters' Rights Act has now received Royal Assent making it an act of Parliament and therefore the law.
The new Renters' Rights Act will deliver long overdue protections for renters across England. Most of these new protections, including the end of Section 21 evictions that have forced millions of renters from their homes with just two months’ notice and no reason given, will come into force on 1 May 2026.

Ben told us:
“The new law is a vital step towards re-balancing power between renters and landlords and should be celebrated.
“Our homes are the foundation of our lives. For too long, our broken renting system has forced renters to live in fear of being turfed out of our homes with little notice and no reason given, preventing us from raising valid concerns with our landlords. At last, these outdated and unfair evictions are finally on their way out.
“The Renters’ Rights Act didn’t appear out of thin air. It is the result of years of tireless campaigning from the renter movement, alongside the dedication and strength of ordinary renters. I could not be prouder of what we’ve achieved.â€

What is Generation Rent?
Generation Rent is the non-profit voice of private renters across the UK. We campaign for everyone to live in a secure, quality and affordable home. We were set up twelve years ago to fight for a housing system that supports renters’ wellbeing instead of damaging it, strengthens communities instead of weakening them, and prioritises people instead of profit. We amplify the voices of private renters to influence the political debate and reshape the housing market to benefit renters. Now that the Renters’ Rights Act has passed, we are working hard to make sure everyone knows about their new rights as they become a reality, and that the law is enforced to reach into people’s homes and truly change lives.
